Photography Assignments to Practice or Get Out of a Slump
1. Look for a point subject and try to compose a shot around it. You need a clearly defined subject and background. Whether the subject is the point or in the background it doesn't matter, as long as the subject is obvious to the viewer. Your composition needs to be balanced. Consider the point of you view. Cut out all extraneous images and simplify.
2. Geometry. Lines, shapes, repetitions, symmetry, rule of threes. Focus on one. Combine different principles to focus on.
3. Practice composing in the theory of thirds. Practice balancing the frame by dividing it into 3 equal parts. Turn Off the Grid. It's not critical that they are placed perfectly on the 3rd. Practice with the looseness of thirds. A little bit of space on one side or another can make a difference.
4. Practice shooting in squares. Find strong point objects to compose around or work with lines. Balance compositions by waiting the corners or sides. Please items directly in the center of the composition.
5. Shoot pictures with the idea of light itself as a subject. Interesting displays of light, interesting flashes of light, interesting contrast in light. Anything that looks like an interesting play on illumination try turning it into a shot.
6. Guiding of the viewer's eye. Find a scene where there's a very obvious subject where there's no doubt what the subject is. And then work of different ways of guiding the viewer's eye to that subject. You can use geometry tone color any of the elements of composition. If you practice like this you will develop leading lines of vocabulary that you can take into more complex situations.
